If you are new to the entrepreneur world you have probably ran into a few words that you have had to google. I know I have been using google left and right lately to make sure I am understanding what is being asked of me. When my website designer Britt asked me to send over my copy I had absolutely no clue what she was talking about!
What the heck is copy? It is the wording on your website. Easy peasy, right? Yeah, I thought so to, until I starting trying to write about myself and my business. I went to all of my favorite photographers to get ideas on what to write. After a while I found myself writing like them and not sounding like myself at all. Not only did I sound like all the other photographers, my format looked just like theirs too. Personally, it was not working for me. I mean it is my way to “talk” to my ideal clients without actually being able to talk to them. It is a pretty darn important if not the most important part of your website.
As I was procrastinating on the writing process, I found a post Marisa made in a Facebook group about being a copywriter. I bet you can guess what ran through my mind… What the heck is a copywriter? Honestly, I became worried and thought I needed someone to submit a “copywrite” for my website content to be protected. Looking back, I find my thought pretty silly, but I really had no clue. (Seriously hoping someone out there had a similar thought!)
It turns out, my content is protected with or without a copywriter (YAY!), but having a copywriter was a stress reliever. She took my subpar “copy” I had already created and turned it in to me! She was able to pick up on the way I talk and edit what I had written to really highlight who I am and what makes me different from my competition. She also had a completely different take on my home page introduction and my about page. Let me just tell you, it looks completely different from where I started.
Do Copywriters just edit what you already have? Of course not. Just like most other services they have different services! Not all offer the same packages, but they range from editing your content, helping you find your brand words, to even writing your copy for you. Crazy right? Who knew this was a service. Okay, maybe you did and I am late to the party (like always) but if this is a service you are questioning, STOP questioning it! Your website is one of the first impressions your client/customer has of you and your brand. So, make sure their first impression is the correct one!
